Why yes, this is another chapter! Detailing why LIGHT is so interested in Thadius!
Thadius stood atop the school and brooded. Ever since the sever with Apogee, he'd been able to remember more and more things. He wasn't just a conduit for shadow power now, he actually could remember-
The rush of power through his veins, the feel of control, the blue in their faces...
NO! What was that?! It can't be true! Thadius jerked his head around, as though the memory was actually happening. Still, these things happened for a reason, and each one was important, it held a part of his past. He could already remember that Apogee was his best friend, and he could remember his mom, but there were...gaps.
"I'd best talk to Shyria about this..."
"No need, I'm already here," Shyria spoke up from behind.
Thad didn't move an inch. "I see. You realize you've lost the ability to shock me once you found my nightly brooding spot."
Shyria stood next to Thad and looked in the same direction. "Well, you're a creature of habit. Unlike most cats I meet."
Thad kept looking over the grounds, making sure that they were clear of people. "Yes, but I've been 'tamed' by this school. So I will have some ruts."
"You never tame a cat. It's impossible. They're wild, unpredictable beings that just share your space, eat your food, and cost you money."
"Funny, that's not what you thought when I confessed my heart to you."
Shyria blushed, but she kept looking over the school. "So why did you want to talk to me?"
Thad grinned. "Ah, changing the topic. Must be an uncomfortable one. But I'll humor you. I've been having flashbacks, memories of things I've done but can't remember doing. Each one helps me identify who I am, who I was. But lately, they've grown dark and troublesome. Do you have any idea why?"
Shyria hmmed a bit. "Well, perhaps, when your minds linked, the scientists wanted to seal off your memories, so that you could be controlled easier? From what I've gathered, this chemical is either costly, unpleasant to make, or a combination of the two, and the scientists probably wanted to explore alternatives."
Thadius snarled. "They stopped me from remembering who I am, just so they could control me? I will-"
At that moment, Thad blazed with power, and the seal on his mind reacted to it by shattering into infinitesimal pieces. The power quickly dissipated as Thad was forced into a flashback of everything he could remember. His eyes rolled back into his head, and then closed. After which, he swayed back and forth, until Shyria caught him and stopped him from falling off the roof.
He was in a small room, built to sustain his needs, but not allow him free...he could hear people on the other side of the door...
"Dr. Cahlvan wants to test the mind-melding effect. Experiments 85 and 86 shouldn't be able to remember anything."
The hate filled his body, and the darkness in the room blotted out everything, despite the light being on...
His mind swirled, and he was young again, learning from a teacher in first grade...
"And what's your name, young one?"
"I'm Thad!"
"That?"
"No, Thad!"
The teacher got her roster and looked for anything that could be mispronounced as 'That'...
"Oh, you're Thadius Cahlvan!"
"I like the name Thad, though. It's shorter."
His mind swirled again, and he was at his mother's funeral. But now, he could hear his father...
"Yes, I am glad that she's dead, the experiment worked, and it is time to move on to phase two. No, I won't be around when you do it, I'm going back to the institute full-time. I doubt he'll remember me, I've been putting an amnesiac in his cereal for the past year in preparation. Tell Frank he did a good job."
His father...his father...no, it couldn't be...
"But it is, Experiment 85. It is."
He whipped his head around and saw his father standing there, in the midst of his mind. "How...?"
"Oh really, is it that hard to figure out? I've been able to get all sorts of chemicals into your breakfast foods when we inhabited the same domicile. Is it so hard to believe that one of them allows me to mess with your mind however I like?"
Thadius frowned. "Yes, it is. This is my mind. You have no place here."
The doctor laughed. "No place? I am your father, and I run this institute that you have sworn to guard! I have every right to be here!"
Then the inside of Thad's mind darkened, and the doctor was afraid.
"You've have no right to be here when you told your friends to kill my mother, the one who cared. You've had no right ever since you up and left. No right at all ever since your son became your experiment. And I finally broke free, hated father, and do you know what I'm going to do now?"
Thadius had been drawing closer to his father ever since he started his speech.
"I'm going to hunt you down and make sure you burn in Hell while you're still alive for all you put me through. I'll be kind, though, I'll give you until tomorrow night to run. It should be something you're familiar with, seeing as you've done it before. Only this time, instead of turning me over..."
Thad grabbed the front of the doctor's coat and pulled him off the ground. He looked directly into his eyes, and then Thad bent over and whispered into his right ear.
"...You'll be running because you're afraid. And if you're not, I can give you nightmares about why you should be."
The doctor was throughly shaking by this point. Shaking in fear, something he'd never done before. But Thad went on.
"And yes, I have sworn to protect this institute, but I'm changing my mind. I'm going to protect the children. I'm going to be far more aggressive, considering I have far more power now. So if I so much as find one more child 'voluntarily' leaving from side A to side B because of your chemical...then I'll cut off a scientist's head and send it to you via shadow express. You only have so long, father, before Apogee recovers as well. And when he does, you'll never be able to rest again. You'll never be able to test again. We'll purge this place of LIGHT, put in some decent teachers that will teach them about the things they need to know, the real world, and then we'll teach them who did this to them."
Thadius dropped his father and looked at him. "Now, for those nightmares..."
"Thadius! Are you all right?!"
Shyria appeared off to the side. Thadius turned to face her.
"How did you get here?"
Shyria held out her hand. "This is all in your head! You have to come out of it! Come with me!"
Thadius turned back to the doctor. "I have seventeen years of pain and suffering to give back to him. I'll let you know when I'm done."
"Thadius! You either come with me now or lose me forever!"
That decided him. Thad turned and jumped at Shyria. As they met, there was a flash, and then...
"Wha?..."
Shyria opened her eyes and removed her paw from Thad's forehead. "Oh thank the gods, you're awake!" And with that, Thad questioned if his ribs would ever be intact again, for he was forced into a hug with a dragoness.
"...ow..." he managed to wheeze out.
"Oh! I'm sorry!" Shyria transformed back into her human form and quickly patched Thad's ribs up with magic.
"Thanks," Thad said as he carefully felt each individual bone.
"So who was that?"
Thad looked at Shyria sitting cross-legged on the roof. "The man in my mind?"
Shyria nodded. Thad thought a bit. "I'll tell you about him the day you tell me why a dragon I saw in Hell gives you the heebie-jeebies."
Shyria nodded, a bit slower this time. "I think I understand."
And with that, no more was said. But a lot more careful hugging was done while the two gazed upon the stars.
