Another chapter of the mysterious night watchman, and plot revealed!
Thadius made his rounds like he did every two hours. It was mainly to make sure that the mutants who were doing the night work hadn't escaped yet.
He passed by the laundry room. "Edward, you okay in here?"
Edward, who possessed gray skin, sharp teeth, and a tendency to go into a rage when blood was spilled, nodded. "Just fine, sir. Might need some bleach later on, though."
Thad nodded. "I'll put it on the shopping list."
Thad then moved to the cafeteria. Little green goblins scurried around, cleaning every scrap they could find. Thad hung his head, remembering that these two had once been human. "Gobbies! You all right in here?"
"Yes, copper!" they chorused. "The scraps are good today!"
Thad then moved to the janitors, who were busy cleaning the stairway in the entry hall. "Need anything, Phil?"
The man shrugged. Nothing right now, it's been silent as the grave so far. The poor man had had his tongue cut out years ago, but his psychics more than made up for that. A while back, though, there was this odd mind deep below ground. Can't be anything, though, can it?
"I don't know, Phil, but it's on my to-do list."
Thad's anger smoldered the longer he walked down these halls. Curse and double-curse those scientists! If not for them, he would be normal! If not for them, he could be with his friend all the time! If not for them, he could be alive as a proper person!
Thadius went outside and noted that dawn was nearing, but he was not quite drained, not yet. And then there was a familiar pair of hands on his shoulders and a familiar voice in his ear.
"Thad...How is it I am up so early in the morning? How did I know where to find you?"
Thad turned around to find Apogee right behind him. "I don't know, my old friend, I was hoping you would."
"When I awoke this morning, I realized there was something giving me energy. I followed it and was led straight to you. Have you learned something as of late?"
"Only what a blessing and curse it is to be your friend and yet be this beast. I swear, I will find a way to be active in the day, just as we have stumbled, seemingly, across how you can be active in the night."
Apogee nodded and looked towards the east. "Dawn nears. Take your other form, my friend, and I shall resume your duties."
Thadius nodded, and his form shrank, grew hair, and had it's clothes melt away into his skin. In mere moments, Thadius was the school cat, who quickly found his way to his comfy bed. He laid down, and went to sleep, just as he heard everyone else awakening...
And only when he was on the verge of drifting off did it occur to him that he had neglected to ask his crucial question of Apogee.
